EXPLORATION TO THE GUALICHO SALTMINES

EXPLORATION TO THE GUALICHO SALTMINES

The Gualicho Saltmines are located 60 kilometres to the west of Las Grutas and at 72 mts under sea level.  They are the largest saltmines in Argentina, the second largest in South America and third in the world, in terms of industrial exploitation.

The excursion departs in the afternoon in modern buses with air conditioning and an unforgettable catering service. The visit to the Saltmine is accessed through a gravel road and it is restricted to a number of visitors for being a saltmine currently exploited; it includes guide, dinner and the possibility to observe the sky with a powerful telescope and infrared glasses.

The temperature at midday can reach 50 degrees during the summer as it is located in a hollow. Desert Track organizes excursions during sunset to enjoy this breathtaking lunar landscape, to end up dining under the moonlight.

During the guided tour of the saltmine, we can observe the harvest, the movement of trucks coming in and out while the guide explains how and why the salty crystals are generated. The heap gathers 450 tons of salt by the entrance gate where the visitors enjoy the spectacular sunset over the saltmine with a glass of champagne.

A dinner with chicken al disco  closes the magnificent tour with spiritual beverages, good dessert and the possibility of observing hundred of stars, the moon craters and the surroundings with the help of a telescope and the infrared glasses. All this happens while the guide describes us the wicket stories of the Gualicho.

FUERTE ARGENTINO

EXPEDITION TO FUERTE ARGENTINO

With the historical 4x4 trucks!

This is a full adventurous excursion: special military trucks, sledges, snorkeling, good lamb and stories of knight templars.

The excursion that nobody should miss in Las Grutas !  Head to the south through the Camino de los Pulperos (Pulperos Road), a gravel road bordering the Patagonian Atlantic Coast. Visit the Pulperos´ Valley and the Piedras Coloradas  beach. Adventure in the sand: sliding down the hill in sand sledges, bird interpretation and observation stroll.

Driving 10 kilometres south we find El Sotano (The Basement) where the country´s highest tide differences are registered. Find out how and why the tides are generated?  Only to be revealed during the excursion.  Follow to the ´Cañadon de las Ostras´ (Oysters Gully) where we can find marine fossils of 15 million years, in a natural set up surrounded by a dessert of scarce vegetation.

The arrival at the foot of the plateau in Fuerte Argentino  is an excellent excuse to do snorkeling in the lake´s salty waters, enjoy a good barbecue with meat, pork chorizos and homemade bread, the famous Patagonian lamb and free red wine, soft drinks, mineral water and desserts.  Coffee, tea and mate for the talkative guests.

A specialised storyteller tells us the stories of the knight templars and the treasure hunt in a natural landscape with the plateau of Fuerte Argentino as a backdrop.  This is our last spot of our excursion and of the legendary warriors.
